| July 2009 | CHIMERA PHARMA REPORTS EXCELLENT RESULTS OF ITS CERVICAL CANCER VACCINE AND UNIVERSAL INFLUENZA VACCINE. Chimera Pharma, the Pharmaceutical company of the Bionostra Group, has obtained positive preclinical efficacy data in animal models for its therapeutic cervical cancer vaccine and prophylactic "universal" influenza vaccine. Following its R&D strategy Chimera Pharma has developed a technology platform based on chimeric Virus-Like Particles that incorporate antigens relevant to human disease. The data obtained demonstrates the capacity of these particles to generate protective and preventive immune responses and validates the technology for the development of treatments against major human diseases. Cervical CancerIs the fifth in mortality among cancer indications. Every year 44.000 new cases of advanced disease are diagnosed and about 4 Million of local Cervical Intrauterine Neoplasias (CIN). Despite the recent introduction of prophylactic vaccines the forecast is that incidence will not be reduced by more than 30% in the next 20 years. Preclinical efficacy data on chimera CIN prophylactic vaccine resulted in tumour eradication and long term survival in all vaccinated animals (10/10) against 100% mortality of untreated animals. InfluenzaIs a global disease that affects more than 1.000 Million people every year, of which between 3 and 5 Million suffer from a severe from that results in about 500.000 deaths. Every year over 200 M people are vaccinated in the world against seasonal influenza. Preclinical efficacy data demonstrate that upon exposure of a four times 50% lethal dose of H1N1 influenza strain, animals vaccinated with Chimera Pharma candidate vaccine showed an 85% survival against this high infection dose versus 100% mortality for unvaccinated animals. Chief Executive Officer of Chimera Pharma, Juan Carlos del Castillo said "We are very excited with the obtained results and look forward to the clinical development of these promising vaccines".
President of the Bionostra Group, Santiago Gimeno said "These data validate the application of Chimera's technology platform to further developments in human health. We are proud of our first class scientific team that has made this possible and very thankful to the strong support received from our investors and regional and national administrations ". |
